Rally/Adventure: Henno van Bergeijk crosses Darien Gap on Yamaha XT 500

The Darien Gap - Classic Yamaha bikers ride unexplored area

The Dutch Henno van Bergeijk, who sucesfully finished the Dakar Rally on his XT500 in 2006 and his brother Cornie, who is not as fast, but for sure as adventurous as Henno (Sahara, Mongolia, India) are facing a new challenge: In February/March 2007 they will ride their motorcycles through the Darien Gap.

The Pan American Highway, which runs from Alaska through the USA and Central America all the way to Patagonia and the most southern point on Argentina's Tierra del Fuego, has one big gap: The Darien Gap. This rough and impenetrable area, situated between Colombia and Panama covers about 40.000 square kilomers. It's foremost a jungle with swamps and rivers, but also with mountainous areas and canyons. A handfull of indians inhabit the area. They live of what the jungle supplies them with.

There are different routes through the Darien. The route Henno and Cornie will follow has never been explored on motorcycles before. This adventure will feed stories that have never been told before, about contrasts and similarities that go beyond recognition. About survival in the jungle and persistence of life. Two worlds that will meet and have to live life to the limit to survive.

"We will have to clear our paths regurarly using hatchets or machetes. We will have to pull, push, carry our yamaha's and ourselves through the mud. We will have to winch our bikes along steep climbs and descents and many rivercrossings will be difficult. Of course the climate is tropical, wet and hot and we expect many inconveniences like insects, leeches, snakes, aligators. But above all it is going to be a great journey," says Henno.

We invite you to travel along by sharing our adventure with your readers, viewers, audience; so that our stories will be yours, to be told around the world for the years to come.
